Recon Outdoors Digital Scouting Cameras


Recon Outdoors started with a great idea and great technology. But they lacked the great package to make their product concept “real” to potential distributors.

The Concept

Recon Outdoors started with a unique idea and innovative technology that served hunters in scouting outdoor areas and digitally capturing data along with photographic accounts of game movements within its view. Hunters could either use the device in hand or set it and leave it to operate automatically.

The Problem

Despite developing an exceptional product with a big bang, the company felt its weak brand recognition was holding it back. Recon Outdoors was aggressively seeking to bolster business by placing their camera with large retail distributors. But they realized a full brand update was required if they wanted to be positioned as a serious player in this market. And, since many hunters were unfamiliar with the new technology, a marketing campaign to education potential users was also called for.

The Target

Hunters who incorporate the latest technological advances into their hunting strategies, nature enthusiasts who want to photograph animals unobtrusively in their natural habitats, and the security-minded who want surveillance of their property.

The Challenge

The package redesign challenged Inergi designers on several fronts. The new retail package had to be inexpensive, allow the camera to be visible through the package, and offer display flexibility − accommodating both shelf and hanging display options. Beyond new packaging, Inergi needed to create and maintain a consistent presence in the marketplace with optimal and consistent spotlighting of the Recon Outdoors brand across all marketing materials, to update event promotions, and to expand the functionality and offerings of its website.

The Solution

Relying on Inergi’s retail experience, designers developed a clamshell package concept that met all the criteria for cost, visibility, and display. The package insert informed potential buyers of important, but lesser known, camera features.

Design standards were developed and consistently incorporated across all Inergi services for Recon Outdoors, and a general brand was established. Designs with a similar look and feel were created for brochures, cut sheets, rack cards, magazine advertisements for national publications, packages, a website, exhibit booth graphics, and other event support material.

The Result

Initial package concepts presented to the two largest distributors in the U.S. hunting industry resulted in inclusion of the product into their distribution channel before production even began. Both distributors felt that the strength of the Inergi’s product brand and marketing material made the difference.

Recon Outdoors has built a growing customer base, thanks to Inergi’s expertise. Significant sales increases resulted from the appearance of Recon Outdoors’ scouting cameras in several large retail chains. Relationships with RealTree® and Mossy Oak® brands of camouflage resulted in exclusive camouflage-styled cameras. The brand even has an online community of hunters who share stories and photos taken by the Recon cameras. It’s clear Inergi gave Recon Outdoors their best shot.
